Edson Ortiz Hired as Assistant Women’s Tennis Coach – University of Oklahoma

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head women’s tennis coach Audra Cohen announced Edson Ortiz as the program’s new assistant coach on Monday.

“We are thrilled to add a person and coach of Edson’s caliber to our program,” said Cohen. “He is humble and hardworking, and he fits our program’s standard perfectly. His competitive energy coupled with his experience playing at Alabama will be beneficial as we transition to the SEC. He will have an immediate impact on our student-athletes, and we are excited for him and his wife Rebecca to move to Norman.”

From Chihuahua, México, Ortiz joins the Sooners after serving two seasons as an assistant coach for the Santa Clara men’s tennis program where he helped four players attain all-conference honors. Prior to his stint on the Broncos staff, Ortiz worked as a coach for Eagle-Fustar Tennis Academy in Sunnyvale, California, one of the premier tennis academies on the West Coast.

In addition to his coaching duties at Eagle-Fustar, Ortiz also taught at the Nike Tennis Camps over three summers, developing the play of kids aged nine to 18.

Before Eagle-Fustar, Ortiz had a decorated five-year career at the University of Alabama where he was: a three-time All-SEC selection; a two-time SEC Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year (co-Scholar-Athlete in 2020); named four times to the SEC spring academic honor roll; appeared in the 2021 NCAA singles tournament and 2018 NCAA doubles tournament; and was a four-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete.

“I am beyond excited to be joining Sooner Nation,” said Ortiz. “I want to thank Coach Audra and Coach Cobra for giving me an opportunity to come work with one of the best teams in the nation. They have had great success over the years, and I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish this year. It is an exciting time for the program, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.”

Ortiz received both his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s degree in hospitality management from Alabama.
