Investing in solar power was a strategic move for L2D, aiming to provide a cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly source of electricity. Since the beginning of Eastgate’s journey towards environmental leadership in 2020, the first phase of the solar system was commissioned, resulting in a significant energy saving of 1,910 MWh in 2023. The initial 1 MW [AC] or 1.219MWp installation marked a significant step in the centre’s commitment to sustainable energy practices.

The second phase of the project has now added a 5 MW [AC] or 5.997MWp solar power installation, bringing the total capacity to 6 MW [AC] or 7.216MWp. This expansion includes nearly 13,675 solar panels, covering approximately 28,100m² of roof space. The energy generated will power Eastgate’s daily operations, meeting 35.04% of the mall’s energy needs through solar power.

Brian Unsted, L2D Sustainability Lead, commented, “This innovation in renewable energy generation at Eastgate is a testament to L2D’s position in environmental leadership. We are proud to lead many firsts in this space.”

The benefits of this development extend beyond energy savings. The solar installation reduces Eastgate’s reliance on the grid and contributes to a decrease in CO² emissions by an estimated 10.9 tons per year for both phases combined. Additionally, the project has created more shaded parking for customers, enhancing their shopping experience.

Melinda Isaacs, L2D’s Developments Executive, highlighted the collaborative effort behind this achievement. “This significant milestone is attributable to our property team, professional consultants, service providers, and tenants. L2D prides itself on working with the best in the industry to achieve our Net Zero Carbon targets.”

Throughout the installation, new structural steel subframes were constructed to maintain the current rooftop parking. The innovative design allows water to pass through the roof, ensuring the existing stormwater and drainage systems continue to function effectively.

L2D’s proactive step in renewable energy underscores its dedication to growing a sustainable business and creating shared value. The initiative at Eastgate demonstrates L2D’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, benefiting both current and future generations.
