Heroic Move rallied from last in a field of six to win the $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile Stakes (G3) May 27 at Lone Star Park to earn the first graded stakes win of his career.
Campaigned by the partnership of Arnold Bennewith, Randy Howg, Lana Wiest, R6 Stables, Gary Kroop, and Norman Tremblay, Heroic Move is trained by Robertino Diodoro, who currently is banned at tracks regulated by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority but the Texas Racing Commission has allowed the trainer to race there.
Diodoro was provisionally suspended March 29 by the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit after the alleged discovery of the banned substance levothyroxine in his barn at Oaklawn Park. The banned substance case is still pending by HIWU.
Heroic Move earned a pair of stakes placings last year and entered Monday’s one-mile race for 3-year-olds and older off a fourth-place finish in an allowance race at Oaklawn. The son of Quality Road completed the mile in 1:37.69 to prevail by a neck over Touchuponastar . Frosted Grace finished third.
Also Monday, E J Won the Cup rallied from sixth to post a clear victory in the $300,000 Texas Derby. Owned and trained by Doug O’Neill, it marked the second stakes win this season for the son of Omaha Beach , who also finished third in the Santa Anita Derby (G1).
