Cyndi Lauper announces farewell tour

Cyndi Lauper is taking her show on the road one last time. The singer, who took the world by storm with her enduring hit “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” in 1983, has announced a final tour named after that very same single, The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour. The final tour is also Lauper’s first in a decade, with 23 stops in North America including her first-ever headlining gig at Madison Square Garden in her hometown of New York City, per Rolling Stone.

The announcement of Lauper’s final tour comes a day before the premiere of a new documentary about the pop star, Let The Canary Sing, which premieres on Paramount+. The film “chronicles Lauper’s meteoric ascent to stardom and her profound impact on generations through her music, ever-evolving punk style, unwavering feminism and tireless advocacy,” per a synopsis. “The documentary takes the audience on an engaging exploration of a renowned and pioneering artist who has left a remarkable legacy with her art.” As a young person, Lauper escaped abuse at the hands of her stepfather and went on to build a colorful, versatile body of work that earned her commercial success and critical acclaim, from winning Best New Artist at the 1985 Grammys to a Tony Award in 2013 for Kinky Boots.

Lauper hasn’t yet released a statement about ending her touring career; she’ll appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday to discuss both her farewell shows and the documentary. Despite the fact that she’s taking a bow on touring, it doesn’t sound like Lauper is anywhere near done with her work. “What I really wanted… my big dream, was really, really, really to be a great artist someday. And I still feel like I can do it,” she said in a recent interview with CBS This Morning. Though she’s had an enviable career with the kind of legacy many musicians could only dream of, she still has ambitions to make “Something that’s undeniable. Something nobody could tear down.”
