Sri Lankan cricket legend Muttiah Muralitharan, renowned for his record-breaking spin bowling, is making significant strides in the business world with a new venture in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar. Following the success of his soft drink manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka, Muralitharan is now establishing a Rs. 1,000 crore manufacturing facility in the district, with plans to scale up the investment to Rs. 1,400 crore.
The expansion marks a significant milestone in Muralitharan’s post-cricket career, demonstrating his commitment to leveraging his entrepreneurial acumen beyond his homeland. The Chamarajanagar facility represents a substantial investment in the local economy, promising job creation and industrial growth in the region.
The news was shared by Karnataka minister for large and medium industries MB Patil on X and he wrote, “Sri Lanka’s cricket icon Muttiah Muralitharan, now an entrepreneur post-retirement has established a soft drink manufacturing plant in his homeland and has now selected our state for expansion. A Rs. 1,000 crore manufacturing facility is currently under development in Chamarajanagar district, with plans to escalate investment to Rs. 1,400 crore.
“He remains committed to continuing operations in Dharwad. Today’s meeting focused on coordination, with department officials actively facilitating necessary support. Present were Shri. Selvakumar, Principal Secretary of Industries, and Commissioner Smt. Gunjan Krishna,” Patil added further.

The project, spanning 46 acres, is slated to kickstart manufacturing operations by January 2025, according to the minister. The efforts are underway to address minor issues concerning the allocated land. Moreover, Muralitharan is eyeing the establishment of another unit in Dharwad soon.
