Could the NFL (finally) figure out Brock Purdy?

Now with two offseasons under his belt, Brock Purdy is poised to go even further than his record setting 2023 campaign, right? Well there’s now the quesiton of if the league has figured him out and will have a better plan for him. That’s what some takes are saying.

The thing is, this is what league analysts were saying last year.

But let’s not waste any time. CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell made a list of quarterbacks poised to improve or regress in 2024. Of course, Brock Purdy makes the top of the list:

Brock Purdy set the NFL single-season record for passing yards per attempt (9.6) among quarterbacks with at least 350 pass attempts, and led the league in passer rating (113.0) in 2023. However, that production likely won’t be sustainable in 2024.

Purdy averaged the most yards after catch per completion (6.6) and the most yards per pass attempts on screens (8.8) in large part to the production of teammates like 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey, Pro Bowl receiver Deebo Samuel, All-Pro tight end George Kittle and receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Those numbers could be volatile depending on the health and production of the 49ers’ supporting cast coming off a long season that ended with a 25-22 overtime loss in the Super Bowl against the Chiefs.

All of the aforementioned all-star talent surrounding Purdy put together a collectively healthy season. Between the entire league now having a full season of tape on him as San Francisco’s starting quarterback and a possible health regression by his supporting cast, Purdy will naturally take a step back from a production standpoint in 2024.

Well, he’s right in the fact that Brock Purdy might not sustain that production in 2024. I mean, he broke records set by Steve Young and Joe Montana. If he couldn’t mimic that, I doubt we’d complain.

The issue here is the “having tape” on him. The league has had plenty, PLENTY of time to have tape on Brock Purdy. They could have had tape on him in 2022, they could have had tape on him in 2023. No one stopped him. The time it takes to usually get a quarterback figured out is 5-10 games. Purdy has played in far more of those, so I don’t know what more tape the league needs.

We heard this excuse in 2023’s offseason too. “Just wait until he has a full NFL season” they said.

Anyone remember Colin Kaepernick? Remember how quick that regression happened? That’s the league figuring someone out. Brock Purdy? I’m not so sure.

Him not hitting the 2023 numbers is something even I can agree with. Those were just stupid. But if the league was going to figure out Brock Purdy, they probably would have already.
