Cougars mourn the passing of former women’s basketball coach Reid Olsen – Mount Royal University Cougars Athletics & Recreation
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Reid Olsen on Friday, May 24th. Olsen served as the women’s basketball head coach during the Cougars’ inaugural decade in the ACAC.
“Our condolences go to his family during this difficult time,” said Director of Cougars Athletics and Recreation, Karla Karch. “He and his beloved wife, Hughie, were so instrumental in who we are today, and I am forever grateful for their friendship over the years.”
Mount Royal joined the ACAC in the 1964-65 season, and Olsen was an integral part of getting the program off the ground. Alongside his team manager and wife, Hughie, Reid set the standard for other college basketball programs to aspire to. Beginning at Mount Royal Junior College, Reid led the program to three of the first four ACAC titles in women’s basketball (1964-68). When the team transitioned to become the Mount Royal College Cougars in 1968, Reid added yet another ACAC banner to his trophy case, clinching the championship in 1971-72. Olsen retired in 1975 after laying the foundation for one of the most successful women’s basketball teams in ACAC history, with an impressive 15 championships.
Reid and Hughie were honored with the Thomas L. Wood Award in 2010, recognizing their long-term commitment and significant contributions to Cougars athletics. In 2013, Reid was inducted into the Cougars Athletics and Recreation Wall of Fame.
In addition to his remarkable coaching achievements, Reid will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. Throughout his coaching tenure and beyond retirement, Reid was a steadfast supporter of the women’s basketball program. He and his wife frequently hosted dinners for players at their home, sharing stories with current athletes about the generations of Cougars that preceded them.
For many years, Reid was a familiar face in our stands, passionately cheering for the women’s basketball team. He will be deeply missed by many.
Reid’s service will be held on Monday, June 3rd, at 2:00 pm at the McIinnis and Holloway Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Center St. North, Calgary, AB.
