Corey Perry returns to Edmonton

Article content

The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed veteran winger and super-pest Corey Perry.

It is a 1-year, $1.4M contract, incentives included. The base is $1.15m

Perry overcame an off-ice situation in Chicago early in the season, instead inking a “show-me” deal in Edmonton that paid off in several ways.

The veteran totaled 8-5-13 in 38 regular season games for Edmonton, with 4-5-9 in 16 games with the Black Hawks prior to that. And in the case of the former, Perry brought many of his long-familiar traits to Edmonton’s game. Tough to play against. Hands around the net. Good in the dressing room. Gamesmanship plus some, etc.

In the playoffs, however, Perry only managed 1-2-3 in 17 matches. But one of those points was key to the Oilers Stanley Cup march, converting a phenomenal play by Connor McDavid against Florida in Game 5.

Perry no longer has close to the same wheels but remains effective from the blueline in and along the walls. He also appears to have retained a lot of his touch with the puck. Perry certainly appears to have enough remaining in the tank to be useful in the Bottom 6, although he is likely not an 82-game participant anymore.

On 630 CHED with Bob Stauffer, Reid Wilkins and Cam Moon, Perry commented “It’s a great organization, great fan base, but I want to get the job finished. I’m excited to be back. But there is one thing left to do”, referring of course to the cup.

In 1,311 NHL regular season games, Corey Perry has 429-476-905 and 1,426 PIM. And as it has been chronicled often in the past, Perry has pretty much won everything you can and brings meaningful experience and leadership.

Other Oilers Free Agent Frenzy Notes

-F Viktor Arvidsson signs a 2-year, $4m contract with the Oilers. Hell of a player, slowed last year by injuries. But fast, skilled, abrasive. Played with Mattias Ekholm in Nashville previous to his time in L.A. Almost certainly pegged to line up with Leon Draisaitl.

-D Josh Brown joins the Oilers on a 3-year deal at $1m. A hulking, bruising, veteran right-shot D, Brown will effectively replace Vincent Desharnais on the roster, who is currently an un-signed UFA.

-F Warren Foegele has signed in L.A. Foegele played quite well for Edmonton since his acquisition from Carolina. But the price tag to resign him compared to his production is high. Not sure he is a 20-goal scorer on any other NHL team. A good guy, I wish him well.

-F James Hamblin will stay with the Oilers organization. The plucky farmhand had a new 2-year, 2-way contract with $775k (league minimum). Hamblin was 2-1-3 in 31 NHL games last year. He added 4-4-8 in 13GP for Bakersfield.

-C Sam Carrick will not be back in Edmonton. Acquired at the deadline from Anaheim, Carrick has inked a 3-year deal with the Rangers.

-F Noah Philp has re-joined the organization after taking a year off for personal reasons. His deal is 1-year at the league minimum.

-D Noel Hoefenmayer has agreed to a 1-year, 2-way at $775k. Organizational depth blueline signing.

-G Collin Delia inked a 1-year, 2-way $775k deal, also as veteran organizational depth in the nets.

-G Jack Campbell has cleared waivers, for the purposes of a contract buy-out. He signed in Detroit.

-The Oilers 2024-25 Home Opener will be October 9th versus Winnipeg.
