Cillian Murphy Oppenheimer in tense Netflix row

Cillian Murphy worked on Academy Award-winning Oppenheimer with renowned cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who has taken issue with a Netflix boss.

Entering into a war of words with head honcho Ted Sarandos, Hoytema has hit back at his claim that films can be just as enjoyable on a streaming service or mobile phone as they are in the cinema.

The clapback comes after Sarandos suggested such films can work just as well on smaller screens.

“I don’t think that there’s a clean answer because the best version of something may work really well for Netflix but just hasn’t worked to date. There’s some obvious ones, like we don’t do breaking news and that kind of thing, because I think there’s a lot of other outlets for it. People aren’t looking to us for that.”

When asked whether Oppenheimer was within Netflix’s “wheelhouse”, Sarandos said: “Both of those movies would be great for Netflix. They definitely would have enjoyed just as big an audience on Netflix.”

Now Hoytema has told TMZ he does not agree. The outlet reports Sandaros claimed the small screen experience pales in comparison to watching a movie in its full glory at the cinema.

He claims films like Oppenheimer are “expertly curated by filmmakers and artists” while watching on Netflix is like “being subjected to the streamer’s whim.”

Cillian Murphy has began shooting 28 Years Later. It’s the first instalment in a trilogy of movies that build on the iconic ’28 Days Later’, the 2002 cult classic.
