Children’s Charity Golf Classic hits 12 this weekend

An annual fundraiser for the Stollery Children’s Hospital is right around the corner.

The Children’s Charity Golf Classic is running for its twelve time around the links at the Bonnyville Golf & Country Club this Saturday, off the heels of their most generous tournament to date.

An impressive $31,000 was raised last year and the Reid family hopes to hit a quarter of a million dollars over their run in 2024.

“We just started it basically as a fundraiser. It all started when Kennedy had her wish granted through the children’s Wish Foundation,” said organizer Mark Reid about his daughter Kennedy.

“We got to meet the guy that raised the money for that wish trip. So we walked out of there saying, we’ve got to do something right. We got to start something. So that’s how the golf tournament started.”

While some visits to the Stollery are more routine, some are life-saving procedures.

A symbol for the tournament has been passing out bows to the golfers, similar to the ones Kennedy would wear when she was younger.

Fast forward to today, Kennedy is now 18-years-old, and undergone several surgeries at the Stollery.

As Reid says, the Stollery is more local than you think.

“I like seeing my friends. It’s kind of fun to see my friends golfing and giving bows out and cookies,” said Kennedy about her favourite parts of the day.

The tournament is all booked up, but you can still contact Reid to get on the waiting list, in case teams back out last minute.

Many local businesses have put up silent and live auction items for donation to make the day a big success.
