Charity golf tournament to support Surrey Hospice Society

Golfing for a good cause is back.

The Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and Surrey Hospice Society are teaming up once again to host the second annual Surrey Hospice Society Charity Golf Tournament.

The event is set for Friday, Sept. 13, at Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club.

“This is a great cause to support,” noted Scott Wheatley, the Chamber’s executive director. “It’s not the most high-profile charity, so it doesn’t attract the most attention, but Surrey Hospice is very important. It’s all about the final days and weeks of a person’s life.”

Money raised at the event will benefit the Surrey Hospice Society (SHS), a non-profit organization that provides grief-support, free of charge, to the families of people that are terminally ill.

“They need funds to do what they do,” he added. “They don’t get a ton of government funding.”

Wheatley is also hoping the golf tournament will help raise awareness about SHS and the work they do.

The tournament will also assist the Cloverdale Chamber in its efforts “to support and champion” the Cloverdale and East Surrey business community for business, community services, and its residents.

Wheatley said the inaugural event in 2023 was successful, but with all the groundwork done last year, now they have an opportunity to build on that one and make this year’s far better.

“It was a lot of fun and everybody had a good time,” said Wheatley. “It wasn’t as big a success as we had hoped—the first one was hard to get traction on—but with the second one we’ll be raising more money for Surrey Hospice.”

Wheatley said the main sponsor for the golf tournament is Ar-Way Enterprises Ltd.

“They are a really big supporter of Surrey Hospice,” he added. “They are the nicest people in the world and have a family-run business. Just good Cloverdale people.”

Tournament entrants will get a round of golf and dinner and Wheatley stressed that all levels of golfers are welcome—from duffers to professionals and even those who’ve never picked up a club before.

Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased through the Surrey Hospice website at surreyhospice.com/golf. There are also sponsorship packages available.

Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club is located at 18150 8th Avenue. Golf registration opens at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, and tee-off times start at 1 p.m.
