Caitlin Clark Says Chennedy Carter Doesn’t Owe Her Apology: Basketball is Competitive
Caitlin Clark isn’t searching for an apology from Chennedy Carter after she received a hard foul from the Chicago Sky guard during a victory by the Indiana Fever on Saturday.
When asked by reporters on Friday if Carter owes her an apology, Clark responded.
“No, I mean basketball is competitive, I get it,” she said. “Sometimes your emotions get the best of you. Happened to me multiple times throughout the course of my career. People are competitive, it is what it is.”
Clark added that Carter is having a “tremendous” season and has “played great basketball.”
During Indiana’s 71-70 win over Chicago, Carter fouled Clark in the third quarter. Although it was ruled a common foul at the time, it was later upgraded to a flagrant 1 by the WNBA.
While the foul sparked discussion surrounding Clark and her WNBA peers, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft isn’t focused on off-court matters. In fact, she revealed on Friday that Carter is currently her pick for “first place” in Sixth Player of the Year voting.
Carter has been impressive off the bench for the Sky, as her scoring average of 13.9 points per game is the highest mark among all reserves to appear in at least five games this season (via WNBA.com). She’s also adding 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists each night, shooting 53.0 percent from the field.
As for Clark, the former Iowa standout has also held her own to begin her WNBA career. While the efficient long-range shooting that made her a household name in college hasn’t translated to the professional level just yet, she’s still averaging 15.6 points and 6.4 assists per game.
She earned Rookie of the Month honors in May, becoming the fastest rookie in WNBA history to record 150 points, 50 rebounds, and 50 assists.
Clark doesn’t appear to be holding a grudge towards Carter and is looking to keep her focus on the court.
