‘Birds gain more ground heading into final day of Golf Canada Championship – University of British Columbia Athletics

SUDBURY, Ont. – Moving day at the 2024 Golf Canada Canadian University Championship saw another strong day of play across the board for the UBC Thunderbirds who have put themselves in a strong position to secure both the men’s and women’s titles, heading into the final day of competition at Sudbury’s Idylwylde Golf and Country Club.

John Paul Kahlert completed his third straight round under par with a two-under 70 on Wednesday as the third year Thunderbird sits tied with teammate Aidan Schumer atop the men’s leaderboard. With UBC counting a combined three-over on the day, the blue and gold have further expanded their lead atop the team standings as they head into Thursday with a 42-stroke margin ahead of second place Victoria.

The UBC women’s team also expanded their overall lead, now with a 31 shot gap between them and second place UBC Okanagan although several late tee-offs weren’t able to complete their round due to darkness and will finish in the morning prior to the start of the final 18.

A day after setting the Idylwylde women’s course record, Una Chou was on pace to maintain her spot atop the leaderboard with one hole remaining in her third round.

Jessica Ng held onto her fourth overall spot after a five-over par 77 while Bo Brown’s 78 rounded out UBC’s scoring three.

Grace Bell’s 79 kept the third year Thunderbird second in the individual standings while Ng holds onto fourth and Brown a share of fifth with one round to go.

Grace Bell watches her shots with an iron in hand, upside down, maintaining her swing grip but having let the club slide down in her hands so that he hands are only about 20 centimeters below the club face.

Kahlert’s strong week continued Wednesday as he began his third round with four birdies on the first five holes, finishing the day with a bogey-free back nine.

Mackenzie Bickell and Dylan MacDonald both shot a one-over 73 as the former holds down fourth place on the individual leaderboard while the latter is tied for fifth.

Schumer shot a three-over par 75 to round out UBC’s top four scores on the day while Hudson LaFayette managed a 76 to head into Thursday in a three-way tie for ninth overall.

As the T-Birds head into the final round of the four day championship, both the men and women are in prime position to sweep both titles for the first time in two years.
