BFW Postseason Breakdown: Bayern Munich’s Biggest Disappointment

In a season full of disappointment, it means a lot to be the Most Disappointing figure. No trophies, some turmoil, and a lot of frustration got us here, so let’s vent…

Chuck: There could be any one of a number of choices here, but I keep waiting for Alphonso Davies to correct some of the issues that he has had for two-and-a-half seasons and I keep playing the role of Charlie Brown attempting to kick the football. Davies has such a spectacular level of talent that is almost befuddling that he either cannot — or will not — fix those areas of his game (defensive awareness, positioning, decision-making, passing accuracy) that have held him back in recent seasons Selection: Alphonso Davies.

Frank: It has to be Leroy Sané. In my mind, disappointment is measured from the expectations one has to the output delivered. Leroy Sané genuinely looked like Lionel Messi in the first few months of the season as he consistently dragged a lackluster Bayern to result after result with dominant, unstoppable play. But after that, he completely dropped off. His goal contributions vanished, he would not score a Bundesliga goal for seven months and he appeared timid whenever he stopped onto the field. Considering the hype and expectations Sané generated in the first few months and his terrible performances in the second half of the season, Leroy Sané was the most disappointing player this season. Selection: Leroy Sané.

LoneStar249: Similar to Sané, Kim Min-jae was fantastic during the Hinrunde. After leading Napoli to the Serie A title in 2022-23, Kim established himself as a guaranteed starter at Bayern and provided a stable force next to Dayot Upamecano. Half of Kim’s starts resulted in clean sheets and it appeared the defense had found its vocal leader in the 27-year old Korean. After Kim returned from the AFC Asian Cup, everything went south. Bayern was dominated at Leverkusen in a 3-0 rout, Kim lost his starting spot, and he didn’t find another shutout until May 12th (match day 33). The capstone of Kim’s collapse occurred during the first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid. Kim was burned on a basic feint by Vinicius which led to an easy breakaway goal. Later in the match, Kim gave up a senseless tackle in the box, giving Real Madrid a game-tying penalty. This season was a failure all around, but Kim broke the camel’s back by sinking Bayern’s chances of winning the Champions League. Selection: Kim Min-jae.

RIPLT: It’s a French right-back that many forgot, and I’m not talking about club legend Bouna Sarr. Sacha Boey was meant to strengthen the line of defense but instead decided to throw out what was up until then a perfect injury record and succumb to Lucas Hernandez-itis. Since moving in January, he has not played at all and with Josip Stanišić coming back and a Lucas’ brother Theo linked to Bayern, the wide defender category is becoming stacked and there won’t be room for everyone there. Selection: Sacha Boey.

Dasher: After a phenomenal, and some might say title-clinching performance at the end of last season’s Bundesliga, Serge Gnabry’s potential sale was ruled out and the German forward was seen as a difference maker. That proved to be a purple patch, however, because Gnabry not only failed to keep fit throughout the season but was also shockingly disappointing most of the time he came on. For his exorbitant wages, it was yet another extremely disappointing season for the soon-to-be 29-year-old. The club must be looking to offload him this summer, as it can no longer keep paying for constant mediocrity. Selection: Serge Gnabry.
