Take the fun of tennis, add Southborough’s outdoor volleyball court, and what do you get? The answer is Beach Tennis.
According to Southborough Recreation, pickleball isn’t the only offshoot of tennis that is taking off in popularity. And this summer, adults can take classes to “discover the joy” themselves.
Rec has been offering adult classes at the sand volleyball court on the Neary School campus. A second session of the classes run by Boston Beach Tennis kicks off in July.
Rec’s website promotes:
Dive into a new sport on the sand! Beach Tennis is an engaging sport that originated in Italy in 1978 and, recently, it has become all the rage across the world. It seamlessly merges the strategies of tennis and badminton and is played on sandy courts that add an extra element of challenge and enjoyment. In these six-week sessions, discover the joy of playing with our expert instructors from Boston Beach Tennis — the forefront of introducing this exciting sport to Massachusetts!
The public can sign up for either evening or morning classes:
- Thursdays, 7:00 – 8:00 pm, July 11 – August 15
- Tuesdays, 7:00 – 800 am, July 9 – August 13
The cost is $150 for the 6-class session. Click here to register.
In looking back for photos on the blog, I discovered that “sand tennis” was one of the potential uses that former Rec Director Doreen Ferguson spoke about when the court was first built in 2011.
