Batman: Arkham Shadows Announced At Summer Game Fest 2024

The next chapter in the Arkham-verse has been anounced today at Summer Game Fest, with Batman: Arkham Shadow.

The brand-new title, coming exclusively to Meta Quest 3 in the Fall of 2024, appears to center on a character called The Rat King and follows Batman’s quest to stop him. The story-based trailer showed images of a Gotham City in turmoil: fires, civil unrest, and more. Players will be racing against the clock to prevent the 4th of July execution of prominent public officials, such as Harvey Dent on what is being called “The Day Of Wrath”.

Popular characters like Jim Gordon make an appearance in the trailer, albeit briefly, as the trailer was not overly long. This title marks the second Batman VR title, with 2016’s Batman Arkham VR being the other.

Batman: Arkham Shadow takes place in the time between Arkham Origins and Arkham Asylum, and players will come across the origin of many iconic Batman characters like The Scarecrow and Harley Quinn. Iconic locations across the city can also be visited; locations such as Monarch Theater and The Bowery.

Players will be able to traverse Gotham City using Batman’s Grapnel Gun and gliding using the cape. The iconic freeflow combat returns and has been enhanced specifically for VR, and you’ll be able to use Batman’s gadgets to your advantage, like the Batarang and Smoke Bomb.

The Batman Arkham series of games has been incredibly popular for almost 15 years with Arkham Asylum getting the ball rolling in August of 2009 on PS3, Arkham Knight in 2015, and most recently Suicide Squad. A return to a Batman-centred game with Batman: Arkham Shadow is all too welcome as Suicide Squad did not, generally speaking, receive warm reviews upon release.
