Apple may announce a new application for all of Mac, iPhone and iPad line up. Potentially called “Passwords” the new app has been designed to assist users in managing their login information, according to a Bloomberg report. The announcement is anticipated at Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next week.

Currently, Apple provides password management through iCloud Keychain, which allows users to save their passwords across various devices, including iPhones, iPads, and the Vision Pro. The forthcoming Passwords app will offer similar synchronization capabilities but with added features and enhanced organization.

The Passwords app will categorize logins into different sections, such as accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and passkeys, providing a more organized and user-friendly experience. One of the standout features is its cross-platform support, as the app will reportedly extend compatibility to Windows. However, there is no information yet on whether it will be available for Android devices.

Expected to debut in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, the Passwords app will generate and store passwords akin to popular password managers like LastPass and 1Password. This new app aims to simplify the process of managing and securing login credentials across Apple devices.

Beyond basic password storage and generation, Bloomberg notes several other functionalities:

Autofill: The app will support autofill for usernames and passwords, streamlining the login process for users.

Authentication Codes: Similar to Google Authenticator, Passwords will allow users to create authentication codes, adding an extra layer of security to their accounts.

Apple’s WWDC event on June 10th is expected to showcase a variety of new features across its software ecosystem. Rumours suggest the introduction of new AI capabilities for the iPhone in iOS 18 and a significant overhaul for Siri, aiming to enhance the user experience with smarter and more intuitive interactions.

As Apple continues to innovate and expand its software offerings, the Passwords app represents a significant step forward in the realm of digital security. With its debut on the horizon, users can look forward to a more organized, secure, and user-friendly approach to managing their login information. The WWDC event promises to be an exciting showcase of Apple’s latest advancements, setting the stage for future developments in the company’s ecosystem.
