Ancient burial grounds found on Blind River golf course : My Espanola Now

Part of the grounds of the Blind River golf course is being cordoned off to the public after ancient burial mounds were identified.

Mississauga First Nation Chief Brent Niganobe informed the municipality earlier this week that 16 burial mounds have been identified on the Huron Pines Golf Course.

He says when the archeological surveys were originally done, the sites were supposed to be preserved, but they were not adding some of the spots were also destroyed.

Blind River Mayor Sally Hagman says council must move forward on correcting the mistakes of the past and the municipality will respect the findings.

She adds temporary fencing has been erected on the site with working group between the municipality and First Nation looking into more permanent protections.

Both Niganobe and Hagman have also agreed to provide a joint education process for the history to be recorded and respected.
