All Hydro Personnel Evacuated From Churchill Falls

No structures in Churchill Falls have been touched by the wildfire, even though it has crossed the Churchill River.

Everyone has now been evacuated from the town.

Premier Andrew Furey believes they have adequate physical resources to battle the blaze; what they need now is some help from Mother Nature.

He says they need some rain and for the humidex and wind patterns to change.

Showers are in the forecast for today and temperatures are expected to drop to around 14 degrees in the afternoon. The winds will be out of the southwest at roughly 40 km/h.

NL Hydro evacuated its remaining teams on the ground yesterday afternoon.

CEO Jennifer Williams says the plant was built with a 1960s design and as such it is only capable of “limited” monitoring and remote operations.

She says as long as they aren’t modifying the plant for customer load they can have that remote operation. She says customers will have a limited ability to “vary their load, or draw, from the plant.”
