Alberta man charged after teen shot, wounded on his rural property

An elderly Alberta man is in custody facing assault and weapons charges after a teen was shot on his rural property over the weekend.

RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said two boys, aged 15 and 16, were on the land north of Edmonton on Saturday after 9 p.m. when they were confronted by a man with a gun.

The man shot the 16-year-old, who was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was in stable condition Tuesday, Savinkoff said.

Savinkoff said the yard, on the northern fringe of St. Albert, was full of scrap metal and old vehicles.

“The initial report from the victims is that they were on the property looking at the scrap vehicles,” he said. “The circumstances around that are still under investigation.”

Neither youth had any prior involvement with police, Savinkoff said.

Jim Bregin, 84, of Sturgeon County, Alta., faces a charge of aggravated assault and several weapons offences.

His first court appearance is set for July 4 in Morinville, Alta.
