AHS shuts down 3 Edmonton food establishments after inspections

Three food establishments in Edmonton were shut down this month for various alleged violations following inspections by Alberta Health Services.

Ace Coffee Roasters

One of those spots was Ace Coffee Roasters inside Manulife Place downtown, which was ordered to close June 12. Inspectors claim they found the coffee shop was operating without a food handling permit.

AHS noted a series of other violations, including inadequate dishwasher size and paint chipping off in some areas.

The closure was rescinded by AHS Friday.

Green Onion Cake Man’s (mobile unit)

Green Onion Cake Man’s mobile unit was ordered to close on June 15 when inspectors noted a number of issues including:

• Food handlers not properly washing their hands between tasks
• Frozen food being thawed at room temperature
• Disposable gloves being reused
• Wastewater leaking on the ground

Uncle Brian’s Food Company

An AHS mandated closure sign hung on the door of Uncle Brian’s Food Company Friday afternoon. The specialty meat store was ordered to close on June 18 when inspectors found 18 violations. Those included:

• Raw meat stored on the vacuum sealer at room temperature
• Dry-aged meat stored improperly
• Bloody and dirty cleaning cloths stored on the counter
• Meat stored in garbage bags made with non-food-grade plastic
• Flies observed in the facility

AHS tells CityNews the closures remain in place for Uncle Brian’s Food Company and Green Onion Cake Man (molbile unit).

It comes shortly after Calgary business Blowers and Grafton raised concerns about these AHS closure notices being publicized after resolving the issues and not providing updates to say the establishments have reopened.
