After a basketball player was injured in Glen Rock, we cannot give in to fear
2-minute read
I am writing to address the recent unfortunate incident that occurred at our local basketball court, where a player was injured by gunfire. While such incidents are deeply concerning and warrant serious attention, I urge our community not to let fear dictate our actions and decisions.
As a youngster and up until 55 years of age I played basketball in school yards, Salvation Army locations, school gyms, and college intramural teams.
The basketball court serves as a vital hub for recreation, exercise, and community bonding. It brings people of all ages and backgrounds together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and unity. Closing it down in response to isolated incidents would only penalize the majority of law-abiding citizens who utilize and cherish this public space.
Instead of resorting to closures, we should focus on addressing the root causes of violence and enhancing safety measures. This could include increased police patrols, improved lighting, installation of security cameras, and community outreach programs aimed at conflict resolution and youth engagement.
Furthermore, shutting down the basketball court sends the wrong message to our youth. It implies that violence has won and that we are willing to sacrifice our communal spaces out of fear. Instead, we should be demonstrating resilience and determination in the face of adversity, showing our young people that we are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all.

Moreover, closing the basketball court would deprive many individuals, especially young people, of a constructive outlet for their energy and talents. Sports play a crucial role in promoting physical health, mental well-being, and personal development. By keeping the court open and investing in its maintenance and security, we can provide our youth with positive opportunities for recreation and personal growth.
In conclusion, while the recent incident at the basketball court is indeed troubling, I believe that closing it down would be a shortsighted and counterproductive response. Instead, let us come together as a community to address safety concerns while preserving this valuable resource for the benefit of all. By working collaboratively, we can ensure that the basketball court remains a safe and welcoming space where everyone can come together to enjoy the game they love.
