This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

Summary

  • Inside Out 2
crosses the coveted $1 billion box office milestone in just three weeks.
  • The sequel outperformed the original
    Inside Out
and has set a pace to break other animated records.
  • It continues to thrive both domestically and internationally, surpassing
    A Quiet Place: Day One
to earn the #1 spot at the box office for the third week in a row.

After just three weeks, Inside Out 2 just crossed an incredible box office milestone. The sequel to Pixar’s Inside Out has been dominating the box office for weeks with multiple record-breaking performances. While the original made $863.1 million before the end of its run, the sequel has thrived with minimal competition and an otherwise slow box office. Given Inside Out 2‘s $175 million budget, having a massive box office take was a necessity, but this run has proven to be even more rewarding than expected.

The $1 billion threshold is a coveted one, as the last movie to manage it was Barbie (2023). According to The Wrap, however, Inside Out 2 has already earned $1 billion in just three weeks. The animated hit managed to hold on against A Quiet Place: Day One for the #1 spot at the box office, and its endurance has allowed it to shatter that milestone. The movie has thrived both internationally and domestically. At the moment, it has $469.3 million domestically and $545 million internationally, which puts it just above that $1 billion threshold.

Inside Out 2 Has Broken Numerous Records

The $1 Billion Milestone Is Only The Latest In Inside Out 2’s Record-Breaking Run

Inside Out 2 is already sitting at the top of the year’s box office and is currently in just its third week. In its first eight days, it became the highest-grossing domestic movie of 2024, and it still has room to grow. To cross that milestone, it needed to beat Dune: Part Two, which earned $282.1 million before its run ended. Overseas, it has been just as successful, as it sits with a higher overseas take than Inside Out (2015), which earned around $500 million. Check out the chart below, which compares the box office performances between the two movies:

Movie Title

Budget

Domestic Take

Overseas Take

Overall Take

Inside Out (2015)

$175 million

$356.4 million

$501.1 million

$857.6 million

Inside Out 2 (2024)

$200 million

$469.3 million

$545 million

$1 billion

The sequel also produced the best opening weekend of 2024 with a $155 million take domestically and $140 million internationally. It also secured the best second-weekend drop and second-weekend performance of any animated movie in history. After a slow box office year, that is an incredible total that proves just how capable the sequel is at surviving and thriving in any box office condition. That resiliency will be tested next week, as it is pitted against Despicable Me 4, which should provide major competition.

The $1 billion milestone is a major sign of recovery after the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes of 2023 halted marketing and progress for months. Inside Out 2 is the first movie to hit the $1 billion mark after the strikes and is another sign of recovery for the box office. Pixar’s accomplishment is a much-needed development that could fuel years of recovery for both animated and live-action movies.
