Report: Seize the Grey will ‘probably’ run next in Haskell

The Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational on July 20 is the probable next start for Preakness winner Seize the Grey.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas cited the Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga on July 27 as another possible next option for the Preakness winner, according to a report by Byron King of BloodHorse. However, Lukas told BloodHorse that Seize the Grey would “probably” go to the Haskell due to its Grade 1 status. Lukas has won the Haskell once, in 1995 with the Hall of Fame filly Serena’s Song.

No matter where he starts next, King reported that the summer goal for Seize the Grey is the $1.25 million Travers (G1) on August 24 at Saratoga. Lukas has won the Travers three times, most recently with the champion Will Take Charge in 2013.

Seize the Grey is currently 11: 4-0-3 with $1,839,908 in career earnings.  The son of Arrogate, owned by the microshare syndicate MyRacehorse, broke his maiden at Saratoga on July 29 in his second career start. His first stakes victory came May 4 in the Pat Day Mile (G2), with his second two weeks later in the Preakness.

The colt will have to bounce back from a seventh-place finish in the Belmont Stakes on June 8. That day at Saratoga, he set a contensted early pace but was overhauled by eventual winner Dornoch into the lane and weakened, crossing the wire 12 3/4 lengths behind the winner.
