College basketball | ‘Jacks add Cade Potter, a D-1 transfer from High Point University

The Cal Poly Humboldt basketball team continues to fill out its roster with the addition of junior power forward Cade Potter, who joins the ‘Jacks after transferring in from High Point University, a Division I school from North Carolina.

The 6’7” Potter, redshirted at Utah State for his sophomore year after not appearing in any games as a freshman before heading to High Point where he spent last season. In 22 games last season, Potter averaged 2.7 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game. Potter also averaged 0.28 blocks and steals per game. At the Division II level, Potter will hope to shoot the ball a bit better, after shooting 38% from the field, 16% from three-point range on 1.41 attempts a game while shooting 57% from the free throw line.

Potter is from Yorba Linda and played his high school basketball at Orange Lutheran High School, averaging 10.8 points per game as a senior with the Lancers.

“Cade is someone we have been following for quite some time,” said ‘Jacks head coach Chris Tifft in a release Thursday. “His experience at High Point and Utah State will be extremely pivotal to our program as we continue to build a championship culture. He plays with strength and toughness and can knock down shots from the perimeter. But best of all, Cade is a hard worker and is excited to be joining our Lumberjack basketball family.”

Potter joins fellow ‘Jacks recruits Kyle Frelow, Josiah Sanders and Kalib LaCount as Division I transfers joining Tifft’s program over the offseason. The influx of talent could help the ‘Jacks squad that finished 2023-24 at 6-21, with only three conference wins.

This is the first true offseason for Tifft to put together a team, without being forced to rush to do so, as the former California State University Northridge assistant coach was hired less than a year ago still and had minimal time last summer to formulate a roster.

It’ll be interesting to see how much of last year’s Humboldt team will rejoin the new influx of talent for the ‘Jacks. There’s currently six ‘Jacks still in the transfer portal with Ramiah Adedigba, Emanuel Steward, Rob Diaz III, Isaac Sowell, Pejan Slater and Liyongwei Xie all weighing their options. Brandon Bento-Jackson, a guard from last year’s ‘Jacks team announced he’s committed to San Diego City College.

However the transfer portal shakes out for Humboldt, Potter will provide some needed frontcourt depth as the ‘Jacks look to climb out of the cellar of the CCAA conference.
