Report: Packers almost made historic hire for president and CEO

Insider Jonathan Jones of the NFL on CBS reported Monday afternoon that Washington Commanders president Jason Wright was a finalist for the Green Bay Packers‘ President and CEO position.

The Packers ultimately named Ed Policy as their next man for the position on Monday but if they had gone with Wright, it would’ve been a historic hire.

Wright played for six NFL seasons from 2004-10 with the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals and was hired by the Washington Football Team in August 2020 as their team president. With the hire, Wright became the first black NFL team president and also the youngest (38) active president at the time as well.

Sashi Brown, Sandra Douglass Morgan and Damani Leech joined Wright as the second, third and fourth African American presidents of NFL organizations in 2022. Brown is the Baltimore Ravens team president, Douglass Morgan is with the Las Vegas Raiders and Leech leads the Denver Broncos.

Kevin Warren became the NFL’s fifth black team president when he was hired by the Chicago Bears in January 2023.

Douglass Morgan is also the first black and Asian woman to serve as an NFL team president.

Washington won the NFC East during Wright’s first season in the organization but went just 7-9 and lost in the NFC wild card round that winter. The team has gone just 19-31-1 over the last three seasons and finished in last place in the division in 2022 and 2023.
