Montreal under severe thunderstorm and heavy rainfall alerts

Article content

Conditions will be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain this afternoon and evening, according to Environment Canada.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles, the weather agency advises.

Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes and heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

A heavy rainfall alert is also in force with 50 to 70 millimetres is expected today over Southern and Central Quebec.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
