Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz Headline U.S. Olympic Tennis Team
Top-ranked Americans Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz will lead the U.S. tennis team at the Paris Olympics.
The American team features six first-time Olympians, the U.S. Tennis Association said in Thursday’s announcement. Tennis at the Olympics runs July 27-Aug. 4.
The 20-year-old Gauff is ranked No. 2 in the world and is the reigning U.S. Open champion. She missed the Tokyo Games three years ago because she tested positive for COVID-19.
Gauff is joined by No. 5 Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins and Emma Navarro in women’s singles, while Fritz is complemented by Tommy Paul, Chris Eubanks and Marcos Giron in men’s singles.
Gauff has reached the semifinals at the year’s first two Grand Slams, the Australian and French Opens. She lost to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in this year’s Roland Garros semis and in the 2022 final.
Gauff and Pegula have won five doubles titles as a pair. Gauff won her first major doubles title — with Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic — at the French Open this month.
Pegula returned to action last week from a neck injury in April that forced her to miss the French Open. She was a singles quarterfinalist there in 2022.
