Ladysmith Chamber’s 15th annual golf tourney enjoys sunny skies

The weather managed to cooperate last Friday, June 14 for the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce’s 15th annual golf tournament.

Under almost clear skies, but some gusts of wind, the packed field of 18 foursomes played a full round at Cottonwood Golf Course. The tournament was the 15th tournament hosted by the Chamber and is their largest fundraiser of the year.

“We are really grateful to the Ladysmith and District Chamber of Commerce for being the title sponsor this year, and along with our tournament sponsors Kubera Payments and the Nanaimo Airport and all the other businesses that have come forward, this year has been a huge success,” said Roberta Bowman, executive director of the Chamber.

The tournament was also held in memory of Gordon Reid who died a year ago.

“Gord was a part of Ladysmith, in many ways, through his volunteer work with the Ladysmith Days, Resources Centre, the Show ’n’ Shine, Citizens on Patrol, Festival, as a member of our Chamber and more,” said Bowman.

A donation was made to the Ladysmith Resource Centre Association in his memory.

Along with a fun round of golf the participants were treated to a fine dinner at Cottonwood, followed by a live and silent auction with items donated by local area businesses.

Prizes were also awarded to the teams and players that excelled on the course. The winning foursome was the BDC Business Development Bank of Canada consisting of Johann Van Rensburg, Colyn Strong, Mike Smith, and Steen Cooper.

A prestigious prize for the Most Sportsmanlike/Most Honest Team went to the Pawsitive Touch Canine Massage/Sandra Day, Edward Jones Financial team of Valerie Black, Jonathan Kinney, Sandra Day, and Sam Day.

Showing their skill at hitting the ball were Susan Attiana for closet to the hole for women and Millie Stirling, from LCU Insurance, for women’s longest drive. For the male side, Jeff Isaachsen won closest to the hole and Josiah Nadon, from Grant Thornton LLP, had the men’s longest drive.

As far as future events for the local chamber, on Oct. 25 the Chamber will be recognizing ‘leaders and achievers’ when the community celebrates the return of the Spirit of Ladysmith awards. This event honours individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations that have contributed to the fabric and growth of the community of Ladysmith. Nominations, from the public, are open until July 31. Voting takes place from Aug. 12 to Sept. 16 with blind closed judging taking place from Sept. 23 to Oct. 1. The final three in each category will be announced on Oct. 4 with the live event and presentation taking place on Oct. 25 at the Aggie Hall.
