Dutch Player Announces Retirement From Cricket Hours After Stunning Sri Lanka With Superhuman Effort

Sri Lanka and Netherlands both have been eliminated from the ongoing T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka defeated the European team by a margin of 83 runs in in Gros Islet on June 17 (as per IST)

Sri Lanka finished their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a high as they defeated Netherlands and jumped to third spot in Group D. The Netherlands team fancied their chances of sneaking into the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup, but it was a valiant Sri Lankan team who were determined to finish their T20 World Cup campaign with a convincing win. The European team won the toss and decided to bowl first, but the plan backfired as Sri Lanka registered a mammoth total of 201 for the Dutch team to chase.

With Netherlands being knocked out of the tournament, Sybrand Engelbrecht has announced his retirement from international cricket. In the match that was played in Gros Islet on June 17 (as per IST), it was his fielding efforts that grabbed the eyeballs. Engelbrecht’s astonishing commitment broke the internet and the ICC itself posted his video terming it as a ‘Superhuman’ effort. “Sybrand Engelbrecht pulls off an insane save while doing his best Jumpman impression,” is what the ICC captioned the video.

This was Engelbrecht’s last outing in his international cricketing career and he managed to score 11 runs off 9 deliveries while chasing Sri Lanka’s total of 202-runs. A valiant bowling effort from the Lankan team heavily restricted the Dutch team and they fell short by 83 runs to chase the target. Interestingly, Nepal being knocked out of the T20 World Cup also played a huge role in the Dutch getting eliminated from the ongoing World Cup. As far as Engelbrecht’s international career goes, he has played 12 ODIs and as many T20Is for the Dutch since his debut in 2023.
