Juniper & McKown Points Column: Welcome Back reception, tennis and more

Welcome back! Get ready to sync your calendars with JPVIS’ list of events; we’re off to an early and busy start to summer.  Improvement Day is this Saturday, June 22 at 9:30 a.m. It’s an easy way to contribute to the community: show up at the Community House with whatever yard tools you have, maybe some work gloves. You’ll be assigned to a team to weed, clear brush, shovel wood chips, etc., all under the energetic direction of Gordon Scowcroft and Dave Taylor.

Later that day, from noon to 2 p.m., the newly renovated aquarium will be open to our community for a complementary tour. Details to come in an email.

On Sunday the 23rd, we will all meet at the Community House for the traditional Welcome Back reception at 6 o’clock. Please BYOB and an appetizer to share. Ice will be available. And while you’re there you can pick up your lobster tickets.  You have bought them already, right? Don’t forget to volunteer. Cindy Gagne and Jean Dilley are in charge and they will find the appropriate spot for you. Tickets and volunteer forms are on our website JPVIS.org. The bake is at 5 o’clock on Saturday, July 6th, in Whitten’s field, weather permitting.

By the time this appears in print you’ll see that Dave is back. This year he will again be assisted by Susan Kirby and, new to our courts, Cleyton Splaine. Cleyton is the number one player and team captain at Boothbay Region High School and has taught at the Y and the Yacht Club. Notably he is also a member of the gregarious cat Link’s family. Welcome Cleyton!

Tennis clinics start on the 24th. Be sure you’re on the tennis email list to stay up to date with all the on and off court events.

Joan Warburton-Phibbs is again offering her “Pick Me Up” movement class on Thursday mornings at 10 in the Community House. Classes begin this week, June 20, and are free. Joan is accepting donations for the Chrysalis Center, a non profit dance organization in Delaware/Pennsylvania that brings dance to underserved populations. Joan is the director of the organization.  The one hour class includes a warm up, cardio, balance and stability, and ends with a period of relaxation. All to upbeat music. Any questions, contact Joan jwphibbs@gmail.com

Send your news and announcements to me by Sunday morning to be included in the Register for that week – annedooley@mindspring.com. Note that while JPVIS sends out the column by email on Thursday morning, it is exactly the same as what’s printed in the paper, unless I’ve made an egregious mistake. No last minute additions or changes. It’s a privilege to have a home-town paper, let’s support it by subscribing (it comes to your West Boothbay mailbox on Wednesdays) or buying it at the store.
