Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti will take a shot at winning a Classic on Sunday.

The record-breaking coach is one of several major figures in football to share an interest in horse racing. France and Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann has a string of horses, from which Natsukashi emerged to take her chance in the Prix de Diane Longines at Chantilly in 2021.

Now it is the turn of Ancelotti to try to strike in the 175th edition of the historic race, which has a first prize of £500,000, with a runner from his Scuderia Dei Duepi stable, which he set up in partnership with fitness coach Giovanni Mauri., two days after the Euros kicked off.

Ancelotti, whose previous managerial spells included a period spent at Paris Saint-Germain, is synonymous with Real Madrid, having guided the Spanish giants to success in both La Liga and the Champions League, a competition he has won three times with the club and five times in total.

It was as a tribute to the Madrid club that his filly, which is co-owned with the Ballylinch Stud and the Écurie des Charmes, was named Gala Real.

Her victory in a Listed Prix de Diane Longines prep established Gala Real, trained by Alessandro and Giuseppe Botti, as a leading fancy for Sunday’s classic under Christophe Soumillon. Alessandro Botti said: “It’s almost certain that a sound surface won’t bother her. Although we know that she acts on soft ground.

“Fillies get only one opportunity to tackle the ‘Diane in their lifetime. I hope that the ground will not be on the fast side. I’m convinced that Gala Real has stamina.
