Letter: Why should senators still get paid if they don’t do their jobs?

Lynn Schmidt’s column “In support of a lawless ex-president, Hawley and Schmitt vow not to do their jobs” (June 9) points to U.S. Sens. Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt of Missouri as being among Republicans who signed a public letter to the White House vowing to prevent the upper chamber from doing its job. They claim the Biden administration is behind the conviction of former President Donald Trump on 34 counts of business fraud intended to hide his extramarital affair from the 2016 voters.

Our senators say they will not vote on political/judicial appointees or consider the Democratic legislation. How long are these senators not going to the work as they are required to do as our Missouri senators? They took an oath when they were sworn in, but now they are going to stop working?

What evidence do they have connecting the New York court system to the White House?

What evidence do they have showing the conviction of Trump is a sham?

It is interesting to make these statements and sign letters and stop performing their jobs while continuing to get paid, based solely on their opinions.

I am not able to do stop working as a teacher just because I do not agree with the verdict of a court. I would lose my job. So how is it Hawley and Schmidt get a pass instead of continuing to work as a deliberate members of Congress representing the state of Missouri?
