India beats USA in thrilling, low-scoring T20 Cricket World Cup match

The showdown between the up-and-coming USA team and the seasoned veteran Indian team in the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup match Wednesday looked to be a thriller. And it was — until India took over near the end and finished with 111 runs while losing only three wickets (outs) over the USA’s 110 and 8.
India won the toss before play began at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium and chose to bowl to USA. That would be an effective move that would impact the game as it would set a low-run chase target for India, which it would meet in route to its third win so far in this World Cup tournament.
In the first half, USA finished their batting session at 110-8. That meant 110 runs and eight men were out, a testament to India’s aggressive and accurate bowling attack led by Arshdeep Singh, who had four wickets (outs) and gave up a nine runs in his four overs of work.
Six of USA’s batters scored in double-digits. Nitish Kumar led the way with 27 runs; Aaron Jones had 24. They start slowly with the scoring with 42 runs in the first 10 overs, but gained 68 in the next ten overs.
When it was the USA’S turn to bowl, they got the start they wanted. Within the first few minutes of play, USA got out India’s opening batters, their superstars Virat Kohli (0 runs) and Rohit Sharma (3 runs). But then the batters that came after them, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav, stabilized their offense for a few overs until Pant was out in the 8th over after the ball bowled by USA’s Ali Khan hit the stumps behind him.
USA would hold India to a cautious batting attack where they only scored 47 runs in their first 10 overs. But the next couple of overs, India started to open up a little more with Yadav and Shivam Dube in a batting partnership.
Yadav finished the match with 50 runs while Dube chipped with 31, both totals that were enough to propel India to their victory.

USA got stellar bowling from Saurabh Netravalkar, who ended up with two wickets while allowing 18 runs in four overs. His teammate Ali Khan finished with one wicket but gave up 21 runs in a little over three overs.
Today’s win now put India at the top of Group A in this first stage of the tournament, which qualifies to go on the next stage where the top eight teams in the four groups will play.
USA may still have a chance to get to this next stage if they beat Ireland in their next match in Florida on Friday. Today’s match was the last one in the World Cup played at the cricket stadium in Long Island.
