Women’s Tennis Recognized Three Times in ITA’s Year-End Regional Rankings – Naval Academy Athletics

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced late Friday its year-end Atlantic Regional Rankings, with the Navy women’s tennis team being recognized three times in the region’s final rankings.
 
Coming off their first Patriot League Championship in program history, the Midshipmen ended the 2023-24 season ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic region. Additionally, junior Emily Tannenbaum appeared at No. 12 among regional singles players, her second-straight year in the regional rankings, while senior Samantha Johns and sophomore Sia Chaudry closed the year as the 10th-ranked doubles pairing in the region.
 
This marks the fourth time in program history the Midshipmen earned a year-end ranking in the region, as Navy was also ranked 10th in the Atlantic Region following the 2017-18, 2012-13 and 2020-21 seasons.
 
For Tannenbaum, she rose in the rankings after coming in at No. 19 last season, an honor that made her the first Navy singles player in program history to be ranked in the ITA’s end-of-season regional rankings. Johns and Chaudry are the second Navy pairing to appear in the region’s doubles rankings, joining Kaylah Hodge and Amanda Keller following the 2016-17 campaign.
 
Under head coach Keith Puryear, the Mids posted a 24-7 record in its toughest schedule at date, including an impressive 21-1 mark at home and going 4-1 in Patriot League play. Defeating Army for the third-straight Star Match, Navy then outlasted the Black Knights in the league semifinals, marking the first time Navy has beaten Army twice in the same season. The Mids then knocked off top-seeded Boston University to claim their first league title and record the program’s first-ever win over the Terriers.
 
Tannenbaum collected All-Patriot League First Team selection for the third-straight season after breaking four program records while tallying a prolific 18-3 dual singles mark and a perfect 9-0 combined record in league action. Shattering the previous single-season overall singles wins (33) and career No. 1 singles wins (36) records, the junior also reset a pair of her own program single-season records, tallying 18 victories at the No. 1 singles spot and registering 55 combined wins over the course of the campaign. She also put herself on the precipice of another school record when her 13-match singles winning streak from Oct. 27 to March 7 tied for second in program history.
 
Becoming the first pairing in program history to claim Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year, Johns and Chaudry posted a 15-11 overall record that included a 10-6 mark at the No. 1 spot in the spring season while also going 3-1 over their last five matches. Earning wins at Richmond and Delaware, the duo also notched wins against the top pairing for then-No. 60 Liberty and Marquette. Being an integral part of the team’s run to a Patriot League title, Johns and Chaudry earned a win at No. 1 doubles over Boston in the league regular-season finale before taking down Army’s top team in the semifinals and defeating the Terriers once again in the league’s championship match.
