MNL Receives 2,900 From Ottawa to Address Housing Shortages

Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador has received $462,900 from the federal government to help build housing capacity.

MP Gudie Hutchings made the announcement in Torbay on Friday.

MNL has hired two capacity building officers who will work with communities as they undertake housing needs assessments, identify their options and look at potential funding streams.

Brian Keating, the Vice President of MNL and Mayor of Marystown, is hopeful the initiative will help address the need and heartbreaking stories he is hearing.

His voice breaking with emotion, Keating says he has received calls from residents who say they had to sleep in the car with their children, and asks what can be done to help them. Keating tells those people that MNL is working to ensure such situations don’t need to happen.

Government says the money will be used to help address housing shortages and provide access to safe and affordable housing.
