May Rounds Out Staff With Hiring of Harrell as Director of Basketball Operations – University of Michigan Athletics

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan David and Meredith Kaplan Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dusty May announced Friday (June 7) the addition of KT Harrell as the Wolverines’ director of basketball operations.

“It was a joy to work with KT over the last two years (at Florida Atlantic),” May said. “His ability to connect and communicate with the players is a tremendous asset. After a standout collegiate and professional career, he is an up-and-coming young coach. We are thrilled he and his family have joined us at Michigan.”

After two seasons with May as Florida Atlantic’s director of basketball operations, Harrell joins him in Ann Arbor in the same position.

“My family and I are very excited about the opportunity to work at a prestigious institution like the University of Michigan,” said Harrell. “It has been an amazing experience to work with Coach May over the past two years and to rejoin him makes me very thankful. His dedication to the game and, more importantly, his players is unmatched. I look forward to supporting him, this amazing staff, and our players in our pursuit of excellence on and off the court.”

While working in Boca Raton, Harrell helped Florida Atlantic to back-to-back historic seasons. The Owls posted two straight 25-plus win seasons, with a two-year record of 60-13. In 2023, FAU won the Conference USA title with an 18-2 record and the following year, Florida Atlantic transitioned to the American Athletic Conference and finished second with a record of 14-4.

Before moving into the coaching ranks, Harrell was a standout guard at Auburn. He scored 1,196 points in his two seasons — the most by any player in two seasons in Tigers history. Before Auburn, the 6-4 guard started his collegiate career at Virginia (2010-12), playing 42 games under Tony Bennett.

After pursuing a professional career overseas, Harrell began his collegiate coaching career in 2020 spending two seasons (2020-22) as a graduate assistant under Bruce Pearl at Auburn. Harrell assisted in scouting and preparing opponent personnel reports while contributing to player development.
