Humane asks users to stop using AI Pin charging cases ‘immediately’ due to fire safety risks

Humane, the company known for making the ChatGPT-powered AI Pin, is asking users to ‘immediately’ stop using the bundled charging case saying it “may pose a fire safety risk.”

According to The Verge, Humane sent an email to AI Pin users informing them about safety issues with the third-party battery cell used in their charging cases, and that it has already severed ties with the vendor who supplied these cells.

Humane did not share this information on X or its official website. However, the company clarified the issue is limited to the charging cases. The AI Pin, magnetic battery booster, and the charging pad remain unaffected as they did not use components from the supplier.

The company said they will “share additional information” when it’s done with its investigation, but it is still unclear if the company will offer a free replacement to affected users. To compensate for the issue, Humane said all users will be offered two months of free subscription worth $24 (approx Rs 2,000) excluding taxes. This subscription is needed to use most of the AI Pin features.

Humane launched the AI Pin in April this year, but many prominent YouTubers and publications complained about the device being slow and unresponsive to the point that it “sometimes takes up to 10 seconds just to get a weather report”.

Festive offer

Another standout feature that allows the wearer’s hand to become a display for menus and experiences also received criticism from reviewers and early adopters, saying they felt the gestures were hard to use and that it was very hard to see what was on the screen during daytime.

Last month, a Bloomberg report suggested that Humane was looking for a buyer and is currently looking to sell for anywhere between $750 million to $1 billion.
