A man died Tuesday after he was struck by a CKPC freight train downtown earlier in the day.

Emergency personnel responded at about 10:50 to reports a pedestrian had been struck by a train near 10th Avenue S.W. between 1st and 2nd Streets.

The man was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition but later succumbed to his injuries, Calgary police said in a statement Tuesday evening.

“While we initially believed the incident to be a mental health matter, upon further investigation, the victim’s death is determined to be accidental,” it reads.

Fire crews, EMS and CPKC staff also responded to the incident, Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Carol Henke said in an emailed statement.

The patient was found on the north side of the tracks and first aid began, including putting the person on a stretcher and taking him to the ambulance, Henke said.

An Alberta EMS spokesperson said the man was transported to Foothills Medical Centre in critical condition.

“The rail engineers were the ones who initially made the emergency services contact,” said EMS. “In the downtown core that time of day, I think there was more than one witness that may have also notified emergency services.”
