Wind warning for East Island lead to ferry cancellations on some routes

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for East Vancouver Island and the Strait of Georgia, and BC Ferries says it has cancelled some sailings as a result.

The wind warning is in effect for East Vancouver Island from Courtenay to Campbell River and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay. Environment Canada says southeast winds of 70 km/h gusting to 90 is expected early Tuesday morning.

“A frontal system crossing the South Coast will bring strong winds to the Strait of Georgia early this morning,” Environment Canada says in its notice.

“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Utility outages may occur.”

The wind is expected to ease up later in the morning.

Ferry cancellations

The strong winds have resulted in some ferry cancellations on the route between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen.

The 10 a.m. leaving Tsawwassen and the 12 p.m. leaving Swartz Bay were cancelled as of 10 a.m.

Earlier in the day, there were cancellations on the Campbell River to Quadra Island, Hornby Island to Denman Island and Texada Island to Powell River routes, but as of 10 a.m. the sailings as resumed as winds have calmed in the areas.

On the Campbell River to Quadra Island route, the 6:15, 7, 8, 8:30, 9 and 9:30 a.m. sailings leaving Quathiaski Cove and 6:35, 7:30, 8, 8:30, 9, 9:30 and 10 a.m. leaving Campbell River were cancelled.

On the Hornby Island to Denman Island route, the 7:30 and 8 a.m. leaving Shingle Spit and 7:45 and 8:20 a.m. leaving Gravelly Bay were cancelled.

On the Texada Island to Powell River route, the 7:50 a.m. leaving Blubber Bay and 8:35 a.m. leaving Westview were cancelled.

Power outages

As of 7:45 a.m., there were a two power outages in the area with the wind warning, though Environment Canada does warn that utility outages are possible due to the wind.

There are two outages affecting customers on Quadra Island, according to BC Hydro. One is affecting 356 customers, and the other 310.
