Meghan Markle could become Princess Henry if stripped of her title

If King Charles were to revoke Meghan Markle’s royal title, she would be known as Princess Henry instead of the Duchess of Sussex.

Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, told Britain’s The Mirror that Meghan could potentially revert to this previous title if King Charles decided so, although this scenario is considered unlikely.

“I don’t think anything will happen to the titles because if they lose their titles, Harry is still a prince of the blood and Meghan, instead of being the Duchess of Sussex, (would) be Princess Henry,” Seward told The Mirror.

As per royal tradition, princesses take on their husbands’ names after marriage. Prince Harry was born Prince Henry Charles Albert David, so if Meghan were to lose her royal title, she would technically be known as Princess Henry.

The same rule applies to Kate Middleton, who is more widely known as the Princess of Wales or Duchess of Cambridge but was first known as Princess William upon marrying Prince William.

The question of Harry and Meghan’s official title arrives amid calls for the couple to be stripped of their royal status. The former Duke and Duchess have been accused of exploiting their title for personal and financial gain while forgoing any of the duties associated with the royal family.

Since stepping back from their roles as senior members of the British royal family in early 2020, the couple have signed multi-million dollar deals with Netflix, Spotify, and Penguin Random House.

Despite the criticism, Seward thinks Harry and Meghan will likely be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex forever, if only in an unofficial capacity.

“The Queen gave them the titles, let them keep them – they’re going to be ‘H and M’ anyway. I think the best thing is to leave them, ignore them, and let them get on with it – which is really what the Palace and the Royal Family are doing,” Seward told The Mirror.

Even if King Charles were to consider stripping Meghan and Harry of their titles, the process would require an act of parliament, according to a Hindustan Times Report.

Royal author Tom Quinn recently claimed that King Charles and Prince William “have had lengthy discussions about stripping” the couple of their royal titles. However, he doesn’t believe they will go through with it. “They are terrified this would backfire and make the situation worse,” Quinn told The Mirror.

“The last thing they want is to give the renegade royals something else to complain about,” he said.
