A 5-year-old mare with 14 career races has died after suffering an injury during a race at Santa Anita, state horse racing officials confirmed Monday.
Blonde Bombshell was injured during Friday’s eighth race at the Arcadia track.
“Blonde Bombshell was pulled up by her jockey during the running of the 8th race on Friday, June 1st,” The Stronach Group, which owns Santa Anita, said in a statement provided to City News Service.
“The horse was transported to the equine hospital in the stable area via equine ambulance for diagnostics. Blonde Bombshell was evaluated and cared for by an expert team of equine veterinarians responsible for her well-being who, sadly, recommended humane euthanasia due to the unrecoverable nature of the injury to her right front ankle.”
Blonde Bombshell had two first-place finishes among her 14 career races, including a victory in a claiming race at Santa Anita on March 15.
She is the eighth horse to die from a racing or training injury at Santa Anita this year, according to the California Horse Racing Board.
