Experts highlight issues of MS patients, caregivers – Times of India

Bengaluru: When Arun Mohan visited a passport office, he was denied entry by a security guard. “My speech was slurred, making the guard think I was drunk. It was 7.30am and I was mad at him for refusing to listen to me,” said Arun, 50, a resident of CV Raman Nagar. This incident was a turning point for Arun. “That was when I consulted a neurologist. He asked me to take an MRI. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS),” added Arun who is now the governing council member of Multiple Sclerosis Society of India. Prior to that, he was misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s and was treated for it for six months. Arun recounted his experience at an event organised by Nimhans to mark World Multiple Sclerosis Day. MS is an autoimmune neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks its own cells or nerves due to an overactive immune response, said Dr Netravathi M, professor of neurology, Nimhans. “It occurs when the covering across nerves called myelin gets broken down,” she added. Various factors, including genetic and environmental influences, infections, drugs, and toxins can trigger abnormal immune responses. “The symptoms include blurring of vision, difficulty in walking and speaking, imbalance, bowel and bladder movement problems, memory problems. Disease-modifying therap is considered effective for preventing MS,” she said. A panel discussion highlighted the challenges faced by MS patients and caregivers.
