The creators of the upcoming unofficial Fallout 2 remake Project Arroyo have recently unveiled more information about it, including the current size of the team and the possibility of a Steam release. Project Arroyo is a highly ambitious recreation of Fallout 2 in Fallout 4’s engine, turning the classic isometric game into a first-person shooter.

Fallout 2 was released in 1998, greatly expanding on the post-apocalyptic world presented by the first game. Considered among the best Fallout games by many old-school players, Fallout 2 never received an official remake or remaster, but some fans are working hard to recreate the game as a modern experience.

Now, Project Arroyo’s lead, Damion Daponte, recently revealed to TheGamer that the remake is making “fast progress” and shared the team’s current ambitions. According to him, there are currently over 100 developers collaborating with the Fallout 2 3D remake, and the team is considering releasing the mod on Steam. Project Arroyo is set to completely remake all areas of the original game, even fleshing out some locations such as San Francisco, which was not as expansive in the original 1998 release. The fan-made project seems to be going well, as seen in Project Arroyo’s Twitter profile, where the devs often share updates, showing new screenshots, videos, and conceptual art.

Fallout 2 Remake Has Over 100 People Working On It, Aims Steam Release

When discussing the possible Steam release, Daponte seems inspired by Enderal: Forgotten Stories, a popular total overhaul mod for Skyrim that turns it into a completely new game, and also gained an official Steam release. However, there is still some work before a possible release on Steam, especially concerning legal issues, and gamers would likely need to own a copy of both Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 before playing. There’s still no official release date for Project Arroyo, but considering that there’s no Fallout 2 remaster in sight, the project seems like the best bet for old-school Fallout players who want a new experience.

If the Steam release does happen, Project Arroyo would not be the first major Fallout fan project to get a release on a major platform. Last month, it was revealed that the upcoming Fallout: London will be released on GOG. Due to its massive file size, Fallout: London could not be hosted on the popular Nexus Mods, like similar projects such as Fallout: The Frontier or Fallout: New California, so the devs had to make a deal with GOG to release the mod on the platform.
