The Alliance for the Control of Tobacco is all for limiting tobacco use, but says it must be done with careful consideration.
The province has expressed interest in upping the legal age for tobacco purchases to 21, and completely banning sales to those born after a certain year.
Kevin Coady, executive director of ACT NL, says government should examine all possible options and cautions against going the cold turkey method.
He doesn’t believe any set date or age to be the immediate remedy to eliminate tobacco usage. He says the issue needs to be examined from all angles with a focus on education and awareness.
Coady worries that a prohibition-like approach to tobacco use may only increase clientele on the black market.
