First Yakima Aviation Day takes off in grand fashion | Fox 11 Tri Cities Fox 41 Yakima

YAKIMA, Wash.- The Yakima Airport is highlighting potential careers in aviation that don’t involve being the one flying the plane.

The first ever Yakima Aviation Day brought aircraft for people to explore along with informational booths to present different career opportunities to young kids.

“How often does somebody actually get to go through the fence and get up close to an aircraft?” says Airport Director Robert Hodgeman. “Almost never. But here today, you could do that.”

Boths include organizations including TSA and Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting to Aero Clubs for hobbyists.

The goal of the event is for younger people who are still deciding what career to pursue, to consider an aviation career.

“I’ve even thought of making my own aircraft company that builds their own airplanes and maybe I could even make my own private airplane and fly it around the region,” said a young aviation fan named Jordan.

Hodgeman says the airport hasn’t hosted an airshow since 1997, and hopes the Aviation Days can be a start to bringing one back.

YKM plans to bring Aviation Day back in 2025.
