Korean grocery H Mart buys S.F. shopping center for million

H Mart, a popular Korean American grocery chain, has purchased the Oceanview Village Shopping Center in a $37 million deal.

The acquisition was first reported by The Real Deal, which said the company bought the shopping center on May 1. Oceanview Village’s 370 condos were not included in the transaction, according to the outlet.

H Mart did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

H Mart, the largest Korean grocery chain in the United States, has grown its Bay Area presence in recent years. In 2022, its San Francisco location announced it was expanding into the vacant 24 Hour Fitness next door, increasing its space to more than 74,000 square feet. The chain also announced plans last year to open a location in Dublin.

That location will be H Mart’s fourth Bay Area store, following the opening of its San Francisco location in 2021 and two San Jose locations in 2017.

H Mart isn’t the only major Korean grocery store to establish a presence in the Bay Area. Another store, Jagalchi, is slated to open in a former JC Penney in Daly City late this year. The 75,000-square-foot location will include a bakery, seafood market and restaurant.
