Tourism Minister Steve Crocker is concerned over the possible impact mechanical issues on Marine Atlantic’s newest vessel, the Ala’suinu, may have on the tourism season.
Marine Atlantic yesterday confirmed an issue with the ship’s lubrication system, casting doubt on when, or if, the vessel will be able to join the Gulf run on June 14 as scheduled.
The Crown corporation is working with Stena North Sea Limited, the vessel’s owner, to correct the issue with an update expected next week.
Meanwhile Crocker says he’s very concerned with the news and the provincial government will be watching the situation closely. He says it was hoped that the new vessel would increase capacity.
He says he’s reached out to the CEO of Marine Atlantic, and federal tourism minister Soraya Martinez Ferrada to discuss the issue, and the province’s concerns.
