Dowling Catholic, Pella earn Iowa girls tennis team state championships

Central DeWitt’s Brooke Bloom and Isabelle Pierce became 1A state tennis champions in doubles competition on Saturday.

Two new state champions were crowned on Wednesday at the Iowa girls team tennis state tournament.
Dowling Catholic earned the title in Class 2A while Pella emerged victorious in Class 1A.
The Maroons took down West Des Moines Valley, 5-1, in the title matchup. Individual match results were not available at the time of publication. Iowa City West earned third place after defeating Cedar Rapids Washington, 5-4, in the bronze medal match.
The win comes shortly after the duo of Grace Frye and Juju Mauro earned the Maroons the state doubles title on May 25.

In Class 1A, the Dutch took home some hardware, defeating Xavier, 5-4. It was a dramatic affair, with things knotted up, 3-3, following the six singles matches. With the state championship in the balance, two Pella doubles teams took control to capture the title.
Emily Blom and Claire Smock earned a dramatic comeback win in three sets (3-6, 7-6, 1-0) at the No. 2 doubles position. Bryn Higginbotham and Mallory Westerkamp earned the No. 3 doubles point in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to seal the deal. Smock, Higginbotham and Lily VanDusseldorp earned the three singles points for the Dutch.
Spencer took home third place with a 5-2 win over Dike-New Hartford in the bronze medal matchup.
