Donations sought to help Summerland family with medical travel costs

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help a Summerland family during medical treatments.

Morton Serbon was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer affecting the body’s lymphatic system.

He had undergone tests at Penticton Regional Hospital and was then taken to Vancouver General Hospital for further testing. He is now in Vancouver and has started chemotherapy.

His wife, Rene Serbon, travels to Vancouver to be with her husband. Her mother is taking care of their two sons and their two dogs.

“With Morton unable to work and Rene being self-employed, the situation is especially challenging,” the GoFundMe page says, adding that the trips to Vancouver involve hotel stays and travel expenses that quickly add up.

The page is at gofundme.com/f/please-help-the-serbons.

A total of $1,350 has been raised, as of May 31, out of a goal of $5,000.

“Our goal is to reduce these extra costs so they can focus on what matters most — Morton’s recovery and their family.”

The medical plan is to have Morton Serbon continue treatments in the Okanagan. At that time, friends will help by setting up a meal train to help with dinners and assisting with drives, errands and other support for the family.

Their neighbours are also looking to set up a silent auction as a fundraiser for the family.

Those interested in supporting the family or contributing to the fundraiser are asked to email Cheryl Gowler through the GoFundMe page.

“Thank you for all that you are doing to help support Morton, Rene, and their family during this difficult period. Every contribution helps. Thank you for your kindness and generosity,” the donation page states.
